Overview

Long intergenic non-protein coding RNA 698 (LINC00698) is a long non-coding RNA gene located on chromosome 3. It does not encode a protein and instead functions as a regulatory RNA molecule. LINC00698 is upregulated in melanoma stem cells, where it promotes tumorigenicity by supporting cell proliferation, inhibiting apoptosis, and maintaining stemness. Mechanistically, LINC00698 exerts its effects through two main actions: (1) acting as a molecular "sponge" for miR-3132, thereby upregulating the pro-tumorigenic transcription factor TCF7, and (2) binding directly to the protein hnRNPM, stabilizing it and promoting cancer cell survival and stem cell-like properties. While LINC00698 is not a classical therapeutic receptor or drug target, it is emerging as a potential biomarker and regulatory node in tumor biology, particularly in melanoma[2][3][1].

Disease associations

Cancer (specifically melanoma progression and stemness of melanoma stem cells)Other cancers possible (as lncRNA dysregulation is common in tumors), but direct evidence is currently limited
04

Safety considerations

Potential concern: Knockdown or inhibition could affect normal stem cell populations or cell cycle regulation, but specific therapeutic safety data are lacking
