Long intergenic non-protein coding RNA 881 (LINC00881), also called LIPTER (Lipid-Droplet Transporter), is a human-specific long non-coding RNA highly and specifically expressed in cardiomyocytes[2][1]. LIPTER plays a critical role in the intracellular transport of lipid droplets by directly binding with two phospholipids (phosphatidic acid and phosphatidylinositol 4-phosphate) on the surface of lipid droplets and with the myosin heavy chain 10 (MYH10) motor protein, thus connecting lipid droplets to the cytoskeleton for effective movement within cardiomyocytes[2][1]. Loss of LIPTER impairs lipid droplet trafficking, disrupts mitochondrial function, and compromises cell viability; overexpression preserves cardiac function and alleviates cardiac steatosis and cardiomyopathy in preclinical models of obesity and diabetes, pointing to its significance in heart disease associated with metabolic syndrome[2][1]. LINC00881 is not currently a direct therapeutic target in the sense of a druggable receptor, enzyme, or transporter; it is an RNA mediator of intracellular lipid dynamics relevant to heart disease biology[2][1][3].
