Long intergenic non-protein coding RNA 954 (LINC00954) is a human long non-coding RNA (lncRNA) classified specifically as a long intergenic non-coding RNA (lincRNA), meaning it is a non-protein-coding transcript over 200 nucleotides in length that does not overlap protein-coding genes[1][5]. LINC00954 is usually treated as a non-coding regulatory RNA, but recent evidence shows it contains a small open reading frame (smORF) that encodes a short 49-amino acid polypeptide, LINC00954-ORF, which may have biological (tumor-suppressive) function in lung adenocarcinoma cells by reducing proliferation, invasion, and sensitizing cells to the chemotherapeutic pemetrexed by regulating proteins such as PCNA and CDK1[2]. While such polypeptides suggest coding potential, the primary role assigned to LINC00954 remains gene and chromatin regulation. LINC00954 and its encoded peptide are not currently established as actionable drug targets or therapeutic receptors.
