Long intergenic non-protein coding RNA 971 (LINC00971) is a non-coding RNA transcript longer than 200 nucleotides, not overlapping protein-coding genes. It is part of the lincRNA family, which is involved in regulating gene expression at multiple levels and plays central roles in biological processes such as cell cycle regulation, apoptosis, and differentiation. Abnormal expression of lincRNAs, including LINC00971, has been linked to cancer and potentially other diseases, making them promising therapeutic targets and biomarkers. LINC00971 can regulate gene expression via mechanisms such as acting as a microRNA sponge and exerting epigenetic effects; however, the full spectrum of its functions and disease associations is an active area of research. Direct targeting strategies or clinically approved drugs for this RNA are not currently available, but its relevance to disease biology is increasing as evidence accumulates.
