The louse respiratory system is a tracheal system adapted for efficient gas exchange and water conservation in lice (order Phthiraptera). It consists of seven pairs of spiracles (one thoracic, six abdominal), tracheae that branch throughout the body, and specialized closing mechanisms on each spiracle to regulate airflow and minimize desiccation. This system facilitates direct oxygen delivery to cells and carbon dioxide removal while preventing dehydration in the louse's dry environment.
