The spiracle in lice is a specialized respiratory opening located on the exoskeleton, allowing air to enter the tracheal system for gas exchange. In lice, these structures are critical for respiration and play a role in water regulation. They are located on the thorax and abdomen and can be opened or closed by muscular action to regulate gas exchange and minimize water loss. Some anti-louse treatments exploit vulnerabilities related to spiral closure/opening mechanisms, either physically blocking them or interfering with normal transpiration/excretion processes.
