Target intelligence / Profile preview
Low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL cholesterol) is a type of lipoprotein particle found in the blood that transports cholesterol to cells throughout the body. Elevated levels of LDL cholesterol are associated with an increased risk for atherosclerosis and cardiovascular diseases. While essential for normal physiology, high LDL concentrations promote arterial plaque formation.
Various mechanisms including inhibition of cholesterol synthesis (statins), reduction of cholesterol absorption (ezetimibe), and increased LDL receptor expression (PCSK9 inhibitors).
