The low-density lipoprotein (LDL) oxidation pathway encompasses the biochemical processes by which native LDL particles undergo oxidative modification, resulting in oxidized LDL (oxLDL). This process is central to the development of atherosclerosis and cardiovascular disease. Enzymatic and non-enzymatic mechanisms contribute to LDL oxidation, leading to modification of ApoB-100 and formation of reactive aldehydes. oxLDL is avidly taken up by macrophages, leading to foam cell formation and plaque buildup in arteries.
