Low Molecular Weight Heparins (LMWH)

Target
LMWH
Molecular classification
Anticoagulant, Heparin derivative, Polysaccharide
01

Overview

Low molecular weight heparins (LMWHs) are a class of anticoagulant medications derived from unfractionated heparin (UFH) by chemical or enzymatic depolymerization. They consist of shorter polysaccharide chains, with an average molecular weight typically between 4,000 and 6,000 Daltons. LMWHs are primarily used for the prevention and treatment of thromboembolic disorders.

Mechanism of action

Activation of antithrombin III, leading to inhibition of factor Xa in the coagulation cascade. Reduced ability to inhibit thrombin (factor IIa) compared to UFH.
