Overview

The lower cervical nerves, specifically the C5 through C8 spinal nerves, are peripheral nerves originating from the cervical spinal cord that primarily contribute to the formation of the brachial plexus (StatPearls, Anatomy, Back, Cervical Spinal Nerves). These nerves provide motor innervation to the muscles of the shoulder, arm, and hand, as well as sensory innervation to the corresponding dermatomes of the upper limb (NIH, Brachial Plexus Injury). While not a single molecular target, they are critical anatomical targets for regional anesthesia, pain management interventions such as cervical nerve root blocks, and surgical procedures (StatPearls, Cervical Radiculopathy). Pathologies involving these nerves, such as cervical radiculopathy or compression due to disc herniation, lead to significant morbidity including pain, weakness, and sensory loss. Pharmacological intervention at these sites typically involves the use of local anesthetics to block sodium channel-mediated signal propagation or corticosteroids to alleviate localized inflammation (PubMed, Regional Anesthesia).
