The lower cervical nerves, specifically the C5 through C8 spinal nerves, are peripheral nerves originating from the cervical spinal cord that primarily contribute to the formation of the brachial plexus (StatPearls, Anatomy, Back, Cervical Spinal Nerves). These nerves provide motor innervation to the muscles of the shoulder, arm, and hand, as well as sensory innervation to the corresponding dermatomes of the upper limb (NIH, Brachial Plexus Injury). Local anesthetics inhibit voltage-gated sodium channels to block action potential propagation; corticosteroids reduce inflammation and stabilize neuronal membranes.
