LOXL2 antisense RNA 1 (LOXL2-AS1) is a long non-coding RNA gene transcribed from the LOXL2 gene locus but on the antisense strand. Unlike LOXL2, which is a lysyl oxidase-like enzyme involved in extracellular matrix remodeling, LOXL2-AS1 does not code for a protein and does not function as a classical drug target (such as a receptor or enzyme). Instead, LOXL2-AS1 may play a regulatory role in gene expression at the RNA level—potentially impacting the expression or function of the neighboring LOXL2 gene through antisense RNA-mediated mechanisms. There is currently no evidence that LOXL2-AS1 is itself a direct disease driver or a therapeutic target, nor is it associated with any approved or experimental drugs, mechanisms of pharmacological action, or routine use as a biomarker for patient selection or efficacy monitoring. Its biological and disease associations, if any, remain poorly characterized and are largely inferential from antisense RNA biology and genomic context[3].
