The LSM1 homolog, U6 small nuclear RNA associated pseudogene, is a non-functional genetic locus related to the LSM1 gene and is annotated as a pseudogene in genomic databases. Unlike the coding LSM1 gene, which encodes an RNA-binding protein involved in mRNA decay and pre-mRNA splicing, the pseudogene does not code for a functional protein and has no established biological or clinical function. Pseudogenes typically arise from gene duplication or retrotransposition events and may retain sequence similarity to their functional counterparts but are generally not transcribed or translated into functional products.
