LSM14A mRNA processing body assembly factor (LSM14A) is an RNA-binding protein essential for the formation of cytoplasmic processing bodies (P-bodies), which store translationally inactive mRNAs and protect them from degradation[2][3]. LSM14A acts as a repressor of mRNA translation and is constitutively expressed in a variety of cells[2]. Uniquely, LSM14A serves as an intracellular sensor of both viral RNA and DNA, binding these nucleic acids and playing a crucial role in the early induction of type I interferon (IFN-β) following viral infection, thus contributing to the cellular antiviral innate immune response[1]. Knockdown of LSM14A impairs early antiviral IFN-β production and enhances viral replication[1]. Besides mRNA regulation and antiviral functions, it may also be involved in mitotic spindle assembly[2]. Diseases associated with LSM14A include Parkinson’s disease and Brugada syndrome 5[2]. No direct targeting drugs, biomarker roles, or safety concerns are currently documented for LSM14A.
