Lumbar vertebral spinous process

Overview

The **lumbar vertebral spinous process** is the posterior bony projection protruding from the back of each vertebra in the lumbar region of the spine (usually L1–L5). It provides attachment sites for muscles and ligaments responsible for movement and stability of the lower back. These processes are palpable as the bony bumps along the midline of the lower back and function in gross anatomical support, aiding posture and protecting deeper spinal elements. Injury, trauma, or degenerative changes to these processes can contribute to lower back pain, but they are not receptors, enzymes, or molecular targets for therapeutic intervention[1][4][6].
