Overview

Luminal viral particles refer to complete, infectious virus entities (virions) located within the lumen of hollow organs, most commonly the gastrointestinal tract, respiratory tract, or urogenital tract. This term does not describe a single molecular target but rather a broad population of pathogens, such as norovirus, rotavirus, or SARS-CoV-2, that may be present in bodily cavities during the course of an infection. In a therapeutic context, targeting luminal viral particles typically involves the use of neutralizing antibodies, antiviral peptides, or adsorption agents designed to prevent viral entry into epithelial cells or to facilitate clearance from the body. Because the term encompasses a vast array of unrelated viruses with different structures and life cycles, it is considered too non-specific to serve as a canonical therapeutic target in drug discovery. Effective pharmacological intervention requires the identification of specific viral proteins, such as proteases, polymerases, or surface glycoproteins, which can be selectively inhibited.
