Lung cancer associated long non-coding RNA 1 (LCAL1) is a long intergenic non-coding RNA located on chromosome 6q14.1, producing a three-exon transcript. LCAL1 is highly and specifically upregulated in lung adenocarcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma compared to normal lung tissue. Experimental studies show that LCAL1 regulates cellular proliferation: siRNA-mediated knockdown decreases cell growth, while overexpression increases proliferation in both cancer and non-cancer cell models. LCAL1 is enriched in the nucleus and associated with regulatory activities in its promoter region, typical for lncRNAs involved in gene regulation. Its tissue-specific expression and role in cancer cell growth suggest it may function both as a biomarker and a potential therapeutic target, although no known drugs currently target LCAL1 directly.
