Overview

The **lung capillary bed** refers to the dense network of microscopic blood vessels that surround the alveoli in the lungs. These beds are composed primarily of thin-walled endothelial cells forming continuous sheets around alveolar sacs. Their primary function is to facilitate efficient gas exchange—oxygen diffuses from inhaled air into red blood cells while carbon dioxide moves from blood into alveolar air to be exhaled[1][3][7][8]. The walls are only one cell thick, allowing rapid diffusion of gases and small molecules. Blood enters these beds via arterioles branching from pulmonary arteries and exits through venules that converge into pulmonary veins returning oxygenated blood to the heart[5][6]. The flow through these beds is tightly regulated by pre-capillary sphincters responding to local metabolic needs. While essential for normal respiration, dysfunction or damage in this network can contribute significantly to diseases such as pulmonary hypertension, acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), pneumonia-induced injury, or fluid overload leading to edema[2]. **Note:** The "lung capillary bed" is an anatomical feature—not a discrete molecular entity like a receptor or enzyme—and thus does not fit standard definitions used for drug targets.
