Modulation of lung function is addressed through diverse drug classes acting on molecular targets upstream (e.g., beta-2 adrenergic receptors, muscarinic receptors), but "lung function" itself is not a single druggable receptor, enzyme, transporter, or gene[4].\n\nThere is a fundamental problem with treating "lung function" as a conventional therapeutic target. The proper approach is to specify a relevant molecular or cellular target such as "Beta-2 adrenergic receptor," "Muscarinic acetylcholine receptor M3," or genetic determinants (e.g., "CFTR") underlying pulmonary biology and pathology.
