A lung lobe affected by emphysema or a post-surgical air leak is a pathological anatomical site rather than a molecular target such as a receptor or enzyme. Emphysema is a chronic condition characterized by the destruction of alveolar walls and the permanent enlargement of airspaces, which leads to hyperinflation and impaired gas exchange (StatPearls, 2023). Post-surgical air leaks, often resulting from alveolar-pleural fistulas, occur when air escapes from the lung parenchyma into the pleural space following thoracic surgery, potentially leading to lung collapse (Journal of Thoracic Disease, 2010). While not a protein-based target, these conditions are the focus of specialized interventions such as endobronchial valves and surgical sealants. These therapies work by mechanically occluding airways to reduce lung volume or by physically sealing pleural defects to restore negative pressure and improve respiratory mechanics (FDA, 2010). Management of these sites is critical for improving quality of life in COPD patients and ensuring recovery after lung surgery.
