Overview

LURAP1L antisense RNA 1 (LURAP1L-AS1) is a long noncoding RNA (lncRNA) transcribed antisense to the LURAP1L gene on chromosome 9[1][4][7]. As an antisense lncRNA, it exerts regulatory effects on its neighbouring sense gene, LURAP1L, as well as on distal targets[3][5]. In cancer biology, LURAP1L-AS1 is upregulated in triple-negative breast cancer and oral squamous cell carcinoma, where it acts as a functional oncogenic regulator by promoting cell proliferation, survival, and the transformation of fibroblasts into cancer-associated fibroblasts via NF-κB pathway activation[2][3][6]. Mechanistically, LURAP1L-AS1 functions partly as a competitive endogenous RNA (ceRNA), sequestering microRNAs that would otherwise suppress oncogenes such as EZH2, MCL1, and KRAS[2]. Elevated expression of LURAP1L-AS1 associates with poor prognosis in breast cancer, making it a potential biomarker and therapeutic candidate, especially for RNA-based interventions, though no direct drug interactions have been identified[2].
