Luteinizing Hormone (LH)

Target
LH
Molecular classification
Glycoprotein hormone, Gonadotropin
01

Overview

Luteinizing hormone (LH) is a glycoprotein gonadotropin hormone produced by the anterior pituitary gland. In females, it triggers ovulation and stimulates the corpus luteum to produce progesterone. In males, it stimulates Leydig cells to produce testosterone. LH is essential for normal sexual development and reproductive function in both sexes. Its release is regulated by GnRH from the hypothalamus and it acts through the luteinizing hormone receptor (LHR).

02

Mechanism of action

LH binds to the luteinizing hormone receptor (LHR), a G protein-coupled receptor, activating intracellular signaling cascades that lead to steroidogenesis, oocyte maturation/ovulation, and male sex differentiation.
