Luteinizing hormone subunit beta (LHB) is a protein encoded by the LHB gene and forms the beta subunit of luteinizing hormone (LH), a glycoprotein hormone secreted by the anterior pituitary gland[1][2][5]. The functional LH hormone is a heterodimer composed of a common alpha subunit and a hormone-specific beta subunit that confers biological specificity[2][5]. LH plays a central role in reproductive physiology by stimulating steroidogenesis in the ovaries and testes, thus promoting ovulation in females and spermatogenesis in males[2][5]. Mutations in the LHB gene are linked to hypogonadotropic hypogonadism, infertility, and certain disorders of sexual development[2].
