Overview

Lutetium-177 (Lu-177) is a radioactive isotope widely used in nuclear medicine as a source of ionising radiation, specifically for its beta emission properties. It decays by beta emission to stable hafnium-177 (Hf-177), accompanied by the emission of low-energy gamma photons. The emitted beta particles have a maximum tissue penetration range of less than 2 mm, making Lu-177 particularly suitable for targeting small tumors while minimizing damage to surrounding healthy tissues. The gamma emissions allow for imaging and dosimetry during therapy ("theranostics"). Lu-177 is primarily used as an ionising radiation emitter in targeted radionuclide therapies for neuroendocrine tumors and prostate cancer. Appropriate shielding and handling protocols are essential due to both external exposure risk from gamma rays and internal hazard if ingested or inhaled.
