Lutetium-177 (Lu-177) is a radioactive isotope used in targeted radionuclide therapy. Its therapeutic effect is primarily due to the emission of beta particles during its radioactive decay, which induces DNA damage in target cells. The beta particles have a short tissue penetration range, allowing for localized irradiation and minimizing damage to surrounding healthy tissues. This localized deposition causes double-strand breaks and other forms of DNA damage within cancer cells, leading primarily to apoptosis or mitotic catastrophe.
