Overview

Lymph node tissue components encompass the diverse structural and cellular parts of the lymph node, including the capsule, subcapsular sinus, cortex, paracortex, and medulla (StatPearls, 2023). These components work together to filter lymph and facilitate the interaction between antigen-presenting cells and lymphocytes, which is essential for the adaptive immune response (NIH, 2021). The stroma, particularly fibroblastic reticular cells and high endothelial venules, provides the necessary scaffolding and biochemical cues for lymphocyte trafficking (PubMed, 2022). In disease, these components are primary sites for cancer metastasis and serve as reservoirs for infections like HIV (Nature Reviews Immunology, 2018). Pharmacological agents often target specific molecules within these components, such as S1P receptors to modulate lymphocyte egress or CD20 to deplete B-cell populations in follicles (Journal of Controlled Release, 2021). Understanding these components is crucial for developing lymph-node-targeted drug delivery systems that improve the efficacy of vaccines and immunotherapies (MDPI, 2024).
