Lymphatic capillaries are thin-walled microvessels originating blindly in the interstitial space of tissues, designed to collect excess interstitial fluid, macromolecules, and cells for return to circulation via larger lymphatic vessels and, ultimately, the blood. Regional lymph nodes are discrete encapsulated organs distributed along these vessels; they filter lymph, trap pathogens, and mediate immune responses. Together, these structures maintain fluid homeostasis, support immune surveillance, and play a key role in disease processes including cancer metastasis and chronic inflammation. Recent therapeutic strategies are beginning to target lymphatic structures at the tissue level by amplifying lymphangiogenesis or modulating immune mechanisms to treat lymphedema, metastatic cancer, and neurological conditions. However, as a drug target, the term "lymphatic capillaries and regional lymph nodes" is conceptually and operationally imprecise and should be replaced by more specific molecular or cellular targets (such as VEGFR-3, lymphatic endothelial markers, or immune cell subsets).
