Lymphatic drainage stimulation refers to therapies or interventions designed to enhance lymph flow through the active or passive stimulation of the lymphatic vessels. These interventions can be physical, such as manual lymphatic drainage (a type of therapeutic massage), pneumatic compression, or device-assisted stimulation, and are used primarily in the treatment of lymphedema and disorders involving impaired lymphatic transport. The lymphatic system is crucial for the return of fluid from tissues to the blood, immune cell trafficking and surveillance, and the clearance of macromolecules such as proteins and cholesterol from peripheral tissues. The process of lymphatic drainage is governed by a combination of extrinsic (skeletal muscle contraction, tissue movement) and intrinsic (spontaneous contraction of lymphatic muscle cells and pericytes) mechanisms. However, "lymphatic drainage stimulation" is not a druggable molecular target, enzyme, receptor, or transporter; rather, it is a process or therapy that modulates a physiologic system.
