Overview

Lymphatic fluid circulation refers to the unidirectional movement of lymph—extracellular fluid collected from tissues—through a network of capillaries, vessels, lymph nodes, trunks, and ducts in the lymphatic system, ultimately draining into the subclavian veins and returning to the bloodstream[1][2][3][5]. This circulation maintains fluid balance, supports immune surveillance by filtering pathogens and facilitating activation of immune cells in lymph nodes, and enables the transport of dietary fats from the gastrointestinal tract[1][2][4][5]. Unlike the closed cardiovascular system, lymphatic circulation relies on muscle contractions and one-way valves, and does not have a dedicated pump like the heart[2][5]. The process is crucial in physiologic maintenance and disease states, such as metastasis of cancer cells, infection management, and inflammatory conditions[1][5].
