Overview

Their primary clinical uses are sentinel node mapping in cancer surgery, diagnosis/evaluation of lymphedema, assessment of abnormal drainage patterns after surgery or trauma, and investigation of suspected infection/inflammation involving the lymphatics[3][4][5]. They do not represent therapeutic targets, nor do they have canonical gene/protein names associated with them.

Mechanism of action

The mechanism involves passive drainage through the interstitial space into the lymphatics after subcutaneous injection; particles are transported by normal lymph flow and accumulate in regional nodes where they can be imaged using gamma cameras[3][4][5]. There is no interaction with endogenous receptors or enzymes.
