Overview

Lymphocyte antigen 6 complex locus protein G5c (LY6G5C) is a member of the Ly6/uPAR superfamily, composed of cysteine-rich proteins, many of which are GPI-anchored and play diverse roles in immune function. LY6G5C is located in the major histocompatibility complex (MHC) class III region on human chromosome 6 and belongs to a cluster of LY6 genes[3][5][7]. Unlike most Ly6 family members, LY6G5C is believed to be a **potentially secreted protein** that is not GPI-anchored and shows intracellular localization, mainly endoplasmic reticulum–like staining, with no evidence for cell surface localization[2]. Its specific molecular function in humans is not well defined but, by analogy to other Ly6 family members, may be related to immune system regulation, cell adhesion, or migration. Expression analyses suggest it could act as a ligand in hematopoietic cell differentiation, but no direct receptor or specific biological activity has been identified[2]. There are currently no known drugs or direct disease associations for LY6G5C[2][4][5][7].
