Overview

Lymphocyte antigen 6 family member G6c (LY6G6C) is a cell surface, glycosylphosphatidylinositol (GPI)-anchored protein that is part of the Ly6/urokinase-type plasminogen activator receptor (uPAR) superfamily and is located in the major histocompatibility complex (MHC) class III region on chromosome 6. LY6G6C is characterized by a cysteine-rich “three-finger” LU domain structure, typical of the LY6 family, and is found at the leading edges and filopodia of cells, highlighting its involvement in cell adhesion and migration. It is thought to play a multifaceted role in immune modulation, hematopoietic cell differentiation, and cell signaling, with potential ligands expressed on undifferentiated hematopoietic cells. Genetic association data suggest LY6G6C may be involved in complex disease processes including cancer and infection, but its precise biochemical mechanisms and therapeutic potential remain to be fully elucidated.
