Overview

Lymphocyte antigen 6 family member L (LY6L) is a cell surface protein belonging to the Ly6/uPAR superfamily, specifically the Ly6 family characterized by a LU (Ly6/uPAR) domain rich in multiple cysteines forming a three-fingered protein motif[2][5]. LY6L is a predicted GPI-anchored or membrane-associated protein[4]. The Ly6/uPAR protein family is implicated in modulating immune function, cell differentiation, and cell-signaling, including the modulation of nicotinic acetylcholine receptor activity[3]. LY6L is encoded on human chromosome 8 within a gene cluster of Ly6 family members[1][5]. While the broader Ly6 gene family is involved in cancer progression, immune regulation, and is considered a source of novel cancer biomarkers and targets, specific functional or clinical data for LY6L itself remains limited. An important paralog of this gene is LY6H[4]. Overall, LY6L is considered a protein-coding gene that may play modulatory or co-regulatory roles in cell signaling, especially in immunological or oncological contexts, as inferred from its molecular family.
