The LY75-CD302 readthrough (also called lymphocyte antigen 75-CD302 fusion protein) refers to a naturally occurring, readthrough fusion gene that produces a chimeric transcript and, potentially, protein combining sequences from the neighboring LY75 (lymphocyte antigen 75, also known as DEC-205 or CD205) and CD302 genes. Both parent proteins are classified as C-type lectin domain-containing receptors and are involved in the endocytosis and processing of antigens, particularly in antigen-presenting cells such as dendritic cells, macrophages, and certain B cells. The fusion transcript and protein arise through intergenic splicing, most notably observed in Hodgkin and Reed-Sternberg cells, where isoforms 2 and 3 are detected. These molecules facilitate immune system functions including antigen uptake, processing, and presentation, and have been implicated in cancer (Hodgkin’s lymphoma) and infection. As this is a readthrough/fusion product rather than a universally expressed protein, its biomarker and therapeutic target status is likely most relevant in pathological states displaying aberrant splicing or gene expression.
