Overview

LYR motif-containing protein 1 (LYRM1) is a mitochondrial protein that belongs to the LYR motif-containing protein (LYRM) family, characterized by a highly conserved tripeptide motif LYR near the N-terminus[1][3][6][7]. LYRM1 is encoded in the nucleus and imported into mitochondria, where it contributes to mitochondrial homeostasis, promotes the proliferation of preadipocytes, and inhibits apoptosis[4][5][6]. It is highly expressed in omental adipose tissue, especially in obese individuals[4]. Overexpression of LYRM1 in adipose tissue leads to altered mitochondrial morphology and function, implicating it in the regulation of adipose tissue development and insulin resistance[4][5][6]. Although LYRM1 belongs to a family of proteins some of which serve as key assembly factors or accessory subunits in mitochondrial oxidative phosphorylation complexes, the specific mechanistic role of LYRM1 in these complexes remains less defined[2][5][6]. There are no approved drugs known to directly target LYRM1, and it is not currently considered a direct therapeutic target, receptor, enzyme, transporter, or classic druggable protein[4]. However, LYRM1 is associated with disease states related to mitochondrial dysfunction and metabolic regulation[5][11].
