Overview

Lysine Acetyltransferase 6 (KAT6) refers to a family of histone acetyltransferases, including KAT6A and KAT6B, that play crucial roles in chromatin remodeling and gene regulation. These enzymes are part of the MYST family of acetyltransferases and are highly conserved across species. They regulate transcriptional activation by modifying chromatin accessibility, are essential for proper development of hematopoietic stem cells as well as neural stem cells, and are involved in cell cycle progression, mitosis, DNA damage repair, metabolism, and immune response. Mutations in KAT6A cause Arboleda-Tham syndrome (ARTHS). Both upregulation and downregulation have been linked to cancer formation/progression. Recent studies show KAT6A orchestrates metabolic reprogramming in CD4+ T cells via epigenetic regulation. Small-molecule inhibitors targeting KAT6A show therapeutic potential against autoimmunity.
