KDM5DP1 is classified as a pseudogene with high sequence similarity to KDM5D (lysine demethylase 5D), a member of the KDM5 family of histone lysine demethylases on the Y chromosome[9][5]. The active KDM5D is involved in chromatin regulation and epigenetic control by removing methyl marks from lysine residues on histone H3, and is implicated in various biological processes and disease states[5][8]. The KDM5DP1 locus itself is non-coding, does not produce a functional protein, and currently has no assigned direct role in human biology or disease. Its nomenclature and aliases (such as "SMCYP" in mouse studies) may cause confusion with functional family members, but it is not a valid molecular drug target by therapeutic standards[9].
