Overview
Lysine-specific cysteine proteinase (gingipain K) is a major proteolytic virulence factor produced by *Porphyromonas gingivalis*. It cleaves peptide bonds at the carboxyl side of lysine residues, facilitating bacterial survival, tissue invasion, and immune evasion. As it is essential for bacterial pathogenicity and absent from humans, it represents an attractive target for selective inhibitor development aimed at treating periodontitis.
