Lysine-specific histone demethylase 1 (LSD1), also known as KDM1A, is a flavin-dependent amine oxidase that plays a central role in the regulation of gene expression through epigenetic modification. It specifically demethylates mono- and dimethylated lysines on histones, primarily histone H3 at lysine 4 (H3K4me1/2) and H3K9me1/2. LSD1 acts both as a transcriptional repressor or activator depending on its context within different protein complexes. Overexpression or dysregulation of LSD1 has been linked to various cancers, and LSD1 inhibitors are being developed as antitumor agents.
