Lysophosphatidylcholine acyltransferase 3 pseudogene

Molecular classification
Pseudogene
01

Overview

The lysophosphatidylcholine acyltransferase 3 pseudogene is a defunct genomic locus with sequence similarity to the gene encoding lysophosphatidylcholine acyltransferase 3 (LPCAT3), but it lacks coding potential due to disabling mutations acquired during evolution. Pseudogenes do not produce functional proteins and are not considered enzymes, receptors, or other druggable therapeutic targets. Some pseudogenes are transcribed as non-coding RNAs in certain cellular contexts, but typically they have no active biological or disease-linked function and do not interact with drugs. This particular pseudogene does not participate in lipid metabolism, cellular signaling, or known disease processes, distinguishing it from the active LPCAT3 gene, which plays roles in phospholipid remodeling and is implicated in metabolic diseases. There is nothing to indicate this pseudogene is involved in any clinical or biomarker applications—its presence merely reflects genomic pseudogenization of the corresponding functional parent gene. In summary, this entry is not a biological target for therapy or pharmacological intervention. The only function is as a genomic relic, and it should not be confused with the active enzyme lysophosphatidylcholine acyltransferase 3 (LPCAT3, MBOAT5), which is itself a real and potentially druggable metabolic enzyme.
