Lysosomal enzyme activity refers to the collective function of hydrolytic enzymes contained within lysosomes. These enzymes are responsible for breaking down a wide variety of biological macromolecules—including proteins, lipids, polysaccharides, and nucleic acids. The optimal activity of these enzymes requires an acidic environment (pH 4.5–5.0). Defects in specific lysosomal enzyme activities lead to a group of inherited disorders known as *lysosomal storage diseases*.
