Overview

Lysosomal proteases are a diverse group of enzymes located primarily within the lysosomes, which are acidic organelles responsible for the degradation and recycling of macromolecules in eukaryotic cells. These proteases function optimally at acidic pH and are essential for bulk protein degradation, antigen processing, proprotein and prohormone processing, extracellular matrix remodeling, and regulation of various cellular processes such as autophagy and apoptosis. Altered expression or activity of lysosomal proteases is implicated in various diseases, including neurodegenerative disorders, cancer progression, kidney disease, and immune system dysfunctions.
