Lysosome function and autophagy pathway

Molecular classification
Other (Represents a pathway and collection of molecular machines, not a single protein or gene)
01

Overview

The lysosome function and autophagy pathway is a set of interconnected mechanisms by which cells degrade and recycle intracellular components and macromolecules via lysosome-dependent processes. The primary forms—macroautophagy, microautophagy, and chaperone-mediated autophagy—all culminate in the lysosomal degradation of cellular material. This pathway maintains cellular homeostasis, responds to metabolic stress, removes damaged organelles and proteins, and is implicated in numerous diseases including neurodegeneration, cancer, and lysosomal storage disorders.
