Overview

Lysozyme g-like protein 1 (LYG1) is a member of the lysozyme superfamily, characterized as a secreted protein with structural similarity to goose-type lysozymes but possessing minimal classical bacteriolytic activity. LYG1 is expressed broadly but is most abundant in the kidney. Functionally, LYG1 operates as an immunomodulator: it promotes the activation, proliferation, and IFNγ production of CD4^+ T cells—thereby enhancing antitumor immune responses. Its antitumor effects in mouse models are dependent on both CD4^+ and CD8^+ T lymphocytes, acting largely through immune modulation rather than direct cytotoxic/bacteriolytic activity. In addition, LYG1 is predicted to play a role in defense against Gram-positive bacteria, though its catalytic lysozyme activity appears limited in humans. No specific clinically approved drugs or biomarkers are directly linked to LYG1 as a therapeutic target yet.
