LOXL2 is a member of the lysyl oxidase family, a group of secreted, copper-dependent amine oxidases that catalyze the oxidative deamination of lysine residues on target proteins, a critical step in cross-linking extracellular matrix proteins like collagen and elastin. It plays roles in connective tissue remodeling, tumor progression, and fibrosis, making it a therapeutic target. LOXL2 is involved beyond ECM remodeling and affects developmental regulation, senescence, tumor suppression or promotion, cell growth control, and chemotaxis. Expression is up-regulated in several cancers and fibrotic diseases such as liver fibrosis.
