M1 Family of Aminopeptidases

Molecular classification
Enzyme, Metalloaminopeptidases, Metalloprotein
01

Overview

The M1 family of aminopeptidases is a large group of zinc-dependent metalloenzymes that catalyze the removal of amino acids from the N-terminus of polypeptides. These enzymes are characterized by two conserved catalytic sequence motifs: a consensus zinc-binding motif (HEXXH-(X18)-E) and the 'GXMEN' exopeptidase motif. Members are found across all domains of life and play essential roles in protein digestion, cell signaling, immune response, peptide hormone regulation, and other physiological processes. They are potential drug targets for cancer and infectious diseases like malaria.
