Macrophage Activation via Interleukin Signaling

Molecular classification
Signaling pathway, Cytokine signaling
01

Overview

Macrophage activation via interleukin signaling refers to the process by which macrophages are functionally polarized and activated in response to various interleukins. This activation can result in different functional phenotypes, most notably the pro-inflammatory "classically activated" (M1) and anti-inflammatory "alternatively activated" (M2) states. Key interleukins involved include IL-4, IL-13 (driving M2 polarization), IL-10 (anti-inflammatory), and IL-6 (context-dependent). Dysregulated macrophage activation is implicated in chronic inflammatory diseases.

Safety considerations

Dysregulated macrophage activation can lead to chronic inflammation and disease progression.Imbalance between M1 and M2 macrophage polarization can contribute to autoimmunity and infection susceptibility.
