Overview

Macrophage antigen presentation refers to the capacity of macrophages, a type of professional antigen-presenting cell, to process and present peptides from engulfed pathogens, tumor cells, or apoptotic debris on their major histocompatibility complex class II (MHC II) molecules to CD4+ T lymphocytes, and sometimes on MHC class I molecules (cross-presentation) to CD8+ T lymphocytes[1][2][4][5]. This process is central to the activation of adaptive immunity, regulation of immune tolerance, and orchestration of inflammatory responses. Macrophages may present antigen during steady state or inflammation, contributing to defense against infections, tumor surveillance, tissue homeostasis, and the development of immune memory. While the overall function significantly depends on context, macrophage antigen-presenting activity is essential for both immunity and immune regulation. Because "macrophage antigen presentation" is a process and not a specific single molecular entity, it is not generally regarded as a therapeutic "target" in the sense of a receptor, enzyme, or transporter. Instead, pharmacological interventions may broadly modulate macrophage activation or MHC expression, but thereS is no single target protein uniquely defined by this term.
