Macrophage-mediated myelin degradation refers to the process by which macrophages, a type of immune cell, actively break down and remove myelin sheaths from nerve fibers. This mechanism is central to both physiological processes (such as tissue remodeling and repair) and pathological conditions (notably demyelinating diseases like multiple sclerosis, certain neuropathies, and within tumor microenvironments). Macrophages recognize, engulf, and enzymatically degrade myelin debris. This is crucial for clearing damaged myelin during injury recovery but can also contribute to disease progression when dysregulated. In some contexts, such as brain tumors like glioblastoma, macrophages recycle myelin-derived lipids to support tumor metabolism.
