Macrophage Polarization Toward M2 Phenotype (M2 Macrophage Polarization)

Target
M2 Macrophage Polarization
Molecular classification
Cellular Process, Immune Cell Differentiation
01

Overview

Macrophage polarization toward the M2 phenotype is a process by which macrophages differentiate into an alternatively activated state. M2 macrophages are involved in tissue repair, resolution of inflammation, and immune regulation. They are induced by cytokines such as IL-4, IL-10, and IL-13, and are characterized by the expression of markers such as CD206 and arginase 1, as well as the secretion of anti-inflammatory cytokines. While M2 macrophages are important for normal tissue homeostasis, excessive M2 polarization can contribute to disease progression in contexts such as cancer and chronic infection.
