The mononuclear phagocyte system (MPS), also known as the macrophage system, is a component of the immune system composed of a network of phagocytic cells distributed throughout the body. The primary cell types in this system are monocytes, macrophages, and dendritic cells. These cells originate from bone marrow progenitors and are found in blood (as monocytes) and tissues (as macrophages and dendritic cells). The MPS is essential for first-line defense against infections but also plays roles in chronic inflammation seen in diseases such as cancer or autoimmune disorders due to its involvement in both pro-inflammatory responses and tissue repair mechanisms.
